The Chamber and San Antonio’s business community are saddened by the news of the passing of General William McBride, who served as the President of the San Antonio Chamber from September 1, 1982 – May 1, 1986. Like many of the incredible leaders in our community, Bill had a distinguished military career prior to holding leadership positions in various governmental, business, educational and civic organizations in the City.

Under Bill’s leadership at the Chamber, there was a deep focus on infrastructure, education, downtown development, and growth. During his tenure, the Chamber supported the creation of the Downtown Improvement District, advocated to the State Highway Commission on the need for highway funding for San Antonio, and helped secure approval and funding for Highway 151, to provide access to the growing north and west sectors of San Antonio. The Chamber also supported legislative proposals from the Select Committee on Public Education Reform and endorsed expansion of the Alamo Colleges District boundaries to the city limits. In addition, to further promote growth and tourism in the City, the Chamber produced an audiovisual presentation to publicize the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, formed the Sports Task Force to study the economic benefits of hosting amateur and professional athletic events in San Antonio, and endorsed and supported a multi-purpose stadium.

A few months ago, in honor of Bill’s 100th birthday, which he celebrated on May 25, 2022, I was asked to look into our archive for information on Bill’s service with the Chamber. While searching and reading-up on his time as our President, I was reminded of how gracious, humble, and down-to-earth Bill was. Upon his retirement from the Chamber, he said, “I have enjoyed my position with The Chamber and my relationship with its members, its leadership and the staff that it has been my honor to lead. It has been a very special privilege for me to represent the business community of San Antonio – and I am deeply grateful to the membership of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce for the strong support and encouragement they have always extended to me.”

We, in return, Thank Bill for his thoughtful service, loyalty, and many contributions to our organization. His impact on our community is deep, and we will miss his good work, his support, and his friendship.
