During the May 6 election, about 72% of voters voted against Proposition A, overwhelmingly agreeing that not arresting people for theft, vandalism, domestic abuse and other crimes is bad for local business and our community as a whole. Even before the proposition was added to the ballot, your Chamber came out in strong opposition to the City Charter amendment. Our opposition was focused on the elements of Prop A that would hurt businesses and public safety in San Antonio – primarily the cite and release policy.
The Chamber also worked alongside the North Chamber and Hispanic Chamber to develop a fundraising Political Action Committee to deploy an educational campaign leading up to the May 6 election. Additionally, neighborhoods, working families, community leaders, councilmembers and business owners were united in their opposition to the provisions in Prop A that banned police from arresting criminals.
The Chamber would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to everyone who supported this effort. Special thanks to San Antonio Safe Co-chairs Eddie Aldrete and April Ancira; those who donated to the campaign; all those who helped spread the word and change the conversation; Councilmembers, Chambers of Commerce and business leaders who took strong stands on this important issue; and the voters of San Antonio whose pride in and love for our city led them to preserve our unique character and quality of life.
