The Greater San Antonio Chamber
Small Business Council meeting proved to be an invaluable opportunity for small business owners to connect and exchange ideas. Attendees engaged in dynamic discussions about how to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape, with a particular focus on compliance and strategic planning. This collaborative environment fostered a sense of community and shared purpose, essential for driving the success of small businesses in the region.
On July 20th, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council held its first meeting at the new Greater Chamber FirstDay Foundation Briefing Center. Led by Council Chair Jana Berton, CEO and President of Tri-Starr Talent, the meeting began with an introduction from the new chair, followed by remarks from Leo Cardenas, Small Business Liaison Officer from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). The SwRI team provided a brief overview of their organization and discussed the benefits of doing business with SwRI for small businesses.
This was followed by a briefing from Sheila Price of ESI, who updated attendees on the Department of Labor's (DOL) new norms in employment law, specifically addressing the DOL salary threshold minimum and the new independent contractor rules. The council concluded with a discussion on setting goals, initiatives, and priorities for the council moving forward.
Looking ahead, the council aims to develop a robust support network providing resources, mentorship, and advocacy for small businesses. By leveraging the expertise of its members and partners, the council is committed to promoting innovation, growth, and sustainability within the local business community. These efforts will ensure small businesses continue to thrive and contribute significantly to San Antonio’s economic vitality.
In addition to these strategic discussions, the council plans to organize a series of workshops and training sessions tailored to the unique needs of small businesses. These events will cover a wide range of topics, from digital marketing and financial planning to human resources and legal compliance. By equipping business owners with the latest knowledge and tools, the council aims to empower them to overcome challenges and seize new opportunities.
Furthermore, the council is exploring partnerships with local educational institutions and industry experts to create internship and apprenticeship programs. These initiatives are designed to cultivate a skilled workforce, ready to meet the demands of the modern economy. By investing in education and professional development, the council not only supports the growth of individual businesses but also strengthens the overall economic fabric of the San Antonio region.
