Jeff Webster, President and CEO of the Greater San Antonio Chamber, represented the business community at the September 13th City Council meeting in support of the development plan for a new downtown stadium for the San Antonio Missions Baseball Club.
“The $1 billion of private development will not only enhance our downtown but create economic opportunity and enhance the quality of life for all San Antonians,” said Webster. “The ownership team and developers will provide equity, lease payments, ticket fees, annual maintenance fees, and guarantees for revenue generated by the development to support a ballpark. It is positive news when growth supports growth.”
After ensuring local ownership and economic development around the stadium, the council approved the plan in a 9-2 vote, marking a pivotal step toward enhancing the city’s downtown. This new stadium promises to strengthen baseball's future in San Antonio and serve as a catalyst for infrastructure improvements and economic growth. The ballpark will be a huge asset to downtown, but the work doesn’t stop there. The Greater Chamber will continue to be a partner to the city in finding ways to improve housing options downtown and across the region.
Webster highlighted the project's potential to create affordable, family-friendly entertainment, particularly benefiting the military families who call "Military City, USA" home. He also highlighted the stadium's role in boosting the local economy and enhancing the quality of life for residents while showcasing San Antonio as a vibrant, growing city. As the leading voice of business for 130 years, the Greater Chamber recognizes the power of sports and recreation in shaping the identity and vitality of a city.
The Greater Chamber will continue to update members on the exciting progress of the stadium project and other downtown developments in the coming months. If you have questions or comments, please contact Katie Ferrier.
