On Tuesday, November 5, San Antonians finished the ballot strong! Voters approved all six charter amendments, including Proposition C, which was endorsed by the Greater San Antonio Chamber. Prop C returns authority to City Council to set the terms of the city manager’s employment, including salary and tenure. Thank you to the following Greater Chamber members who led this campaign: Morgan’s Wonderland founder Gordon Hartman, South Texas Allergy & Asthma Medical Professionals (STAAMP) President and CEO Dr. Erika Gonzalez, AT&T executive J.D. Salinas III, and businesswoman and former Secretary of State Hope Andrade. Congratulations to Immediate Past Greater Chamber Chair Katie Harvey and her team at KGBTexas Communications for a successful campaign!

State Races

In the Texas House, Districts 118 and 121 here in Bexar County were considered competitive by political observers with debates hosted jointly by the Greater San Antonio Chamber and the San Antonio Report. Both races saw Republican victories with Representative John Lujan successfully defending his seat against a strong challenge from Kristian Carranza, and Marc LaHood defeating Laurel Jordan Swift after winning the primary over Representative Steve Allison.

This election underscored the strength of the Republican turnout, particularly among Latino men. Impressive Republican coordination in the Rio Grande Valley and along the Texas border resulted in several successful races and notably close outcomes in many challenging contests. As a result, the Texas Senate now has 20 Republicans and 11 Democrats, while the Texas House stands at 87 Republicans and 63 Democrats.  Additionally, Republican candidates secured all positions on the Texas Supreme Court and the Criminal Court of Appeals.

Federal Races

In our region’s US House races, all incumbents retained their seats, including Representative Greg Casar (D), Representative Joaquin Castro (D), Representative Henry Cuellar (D), Representative Monica De La Cruz (R), Representative Tony Gonzales (R), Representative Vincente Gonzalez (D), and Congressman Chip Roy. US Senator Ted Cruz retained his seat following a strong challenge from Democrats.
