Last week, the Chamber’s Legislative Committee welcomed guest speaker, Texas Senator Carlos Uresti. Senator Uresti gave members insight into what he sees as a priority in the upcoming 85th Texas Legislative Session. Senator Uresti is Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Administration as well as a member of the Health & Human Services, Natural Resources & Economic Development and Finance Committees. The 19th District Senator anticipates a tough session with the budget ranking high on the priority list. He was quick to note the advantage of having a seat on the Senate Finance Committee, the first San Antonio Senator in 17 years to have that seat. Uresti also mentioned other priorities near the top of his list, including transportation, public education, Medicaid and increased funding for Child Protective Services. Following his remarks, Uresti opened up the floor for questions from our members. Members took the opportunity to highlight some of the most important priorities in our recently approved state legislative agenda, including local control, multi-modal transportation and economic development funding. Senator Uresti concluded by encouraging everyone to vote and to engage our delegation before the 85th Texas Legislative Session starts. The first day to file bills is November 14, 2016.
