Mayor Ron Nirenberg and County Judge Nelson Wolff have joined local healthcare leaders to declare a blood emergency, in San Antonio, Bexar County and our metro area. In the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a secondary public health crisis, with multiple factors stressing our blood supply as never before.  Many schools and businesses were closed, more employees worked from home, and more than a thousand blood drives were canceled. But the need for blood is up 15% from pre-pandemic levels, mainly because of the area’s rapid population growth. Blood donations at South Texas Blood & Tissue’s seven donor rooms and mobile drives need to reach 600 a day to meet patient needs and rebuild the depleted supply. To schedule a donation, call 210-731-5590 or visit SouthTexasBlood.org for South Texas Blood & Tissue. Or call 210-358-2812 or visit DonateBloodToday.com for University Hospital. Same-day appointments are available at South Texas Blood & Tissue Center donor rooms in San Antonio, New Braunfels and Victoria, as well as at community blood drives.
