The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce hosted the launch of the 2022 Healthcare and Bioscience Economic Impact Study on Thursday, December 1 at UT Health San Antonio’s Holly Auditorium. The study committee, chaired by Heather Hanson, President, BioMedSA, has been working on the report since early this year. The Chamber completes an impact study of the healthcare and bioscience industry every two years and has been working with the two lead researchers, Dr. Mary Stefl and Dr. Rich Butler, since the early 1990s. The Healthcare and Bioscience Economic Impact Study is an important effort to help San Antonio not only understand where the healthcare and bioscience sectors are, but how they are growing.

Data from this study will be used to make key decisions on everything from economic development incentives to recruiting top talent to our city.  The key highlight of the report is the total economic impact of the industry stands at over $44.1 billion in 2021 and nearly 1 out of every 5 employees in San Antonio works in the healthcare or bioscience industry.  Additionally, both sectors have added more than 24,000 net new jobs over the past decade, fueling San Antonio’s growth.

This key sector of San Antonio’s economy will continue to be a big part of the future of our city. The Chamber is proud to present this study and provide it for all to use.
