San Antonio added 41, 700 jobs since June of last year, resulting in an annual increase of 3.7%, according to the most recent release of monthly labor data by Workforce Solutions Alamo (WSA). The San Antonio metro area has had the largest percentage increase in employment over the past year among the top 35 metropolitan cities with +4.6%. Of the 11 major industries tracked by WSA, eight of them showed monthly gains: Private Education and Health Services, Other Services, Trade Transportation and Utilities, Construction, Manufacturing, Mining and Logging, the Information Industry, and Financial Activities.

Monthly job losses occurred in 3 major industries: Government, Professional and Business Services, and Leisure and Hospitality.  Even with a loss over the past month, these industries still show a positive growth rate for the year.

The jobless rate for the San Antonio area is 3.9%, lower than the state’s average of 4.2% and ranks us as the 2nd lowest unemployment rate (after Austin at 3.5%) of the largest cities in Texas. Bexar County has nearly 40,000 individuals actively looking and available for work.

As of June 2023, 49 of the top 50 metropolitan areas have regained their pre-pandemic level of jobs, including San Antonio which ranks 10th with a 7.7% change from February 2020. Comparing metros based on where they rank relative to pre-pandemic February 2020, other Texas cities in top ten include: Austin at #1, Dallas at #2, and Fort Worth at #5.
