The 89th Legislative Session kicked off on January 14, and the Greater Chamber team was on hand to mark the occasion and meet with the Bexar County delegation. President and CEO Jeff Webster, along with VP of Public Policy Katie Ferrier and Public Policy Program Manager Diego Aldrete, met with several legislators and other public officials on opening day, including Senator Donna Campbell, Representative Marc LaHood, Representative John Lujan, Dean Senator Judith Zaffirini, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and Representative Liz Campos.

The big news of the day was the election of Rep. Dustin Burrows to the powerful role of Speaker of the Texas House. Approximately 2,400 bills have already been filed, and the push now begins to pass them over the next 140 days. The state’s 150 representatives and 31 senators are expected to eventually pass around 1,000 new laws that will go into effect in 2026. The Greater Chamber team will be at the State Capitol to advocate for San Antonio’s business community throughout the session until its conclusion on June 2.
