Members of the Greater San Antonio Chamber team recently toured Venture Data Center's construction site to gain a firsthand understanding of an industry that is playing an increasingly important role in the region's economy.
The Venture team’s presentation illustrated how large-scale data center developments support thousands of construction jobs over several years, while creating opportunities for a wide range of local businesses, including general contractors, subcontractors, equipment suppliers, and food vendors serving workers on-site.
The tour also showcased the workforce opportunities created by the industry. Greater Chamber staff met employees who grew up in the San Antonio area, began their careers in entry-level positions, and advanced into leadership roles through experience and training.
In addition to learning about the project's economic contributions, staff gained a better understanding of the operational aspects of modern data centers, including water use. The facility's chiller plant contains approximately 155,000 gallons of cooling fluid, about 75 percent of which is water. However, this represents the volume of a closed-loop cooling system rather than the amount of water consumed on a daily basis. The system continuously recirculates the water, requiring very limited replenishment over time.
